The HP LaserJet 1010 is among the more seasoned printer options from Hewlett Packard but is still fully compatible with the Windows operating system platform. While the LaserJet 1010 is compatible with the Windows platform, the operating systems can only run the basic driver versions. The official Hewlett Packard website no longer has links to download the drivers for Windows 2000 through Windows 10; however, all the operating systems can still support the LaserJet 1010 fully. The LaserJet 1010 driver series can run on the Windows operating systems:

Windows 2000 less than 1MB

Windows XP 32 bit 54MB

Windows Vista 32 bit 14.2MB

Windows Vista 64 bit 19.9MB

Windows 7 32 bit 14.2MB

Windows 7 64 bit 19.9MB

Windows 8 32 bit 14.2MB

Windows 8 64 bit 19.9MB

Windows 8.1 32 bit 14.2MB

Windows 8.1 64 bit 19.9MB

Windows 10 32 bit 14.2MB

Windows 10 64 bit 19.9MB

If the above basic drivers cannot install successfully, users can use the HP Universal driver and the Dot4 drivers. The Dot4 needs to be installed before the HP Universal driver. Both the Dot4 file and HP Universal files support 32 and 64 bit Windows operating systems.

The original driver for this black and white printer is strictly designed to support USB connections 1.1 or 2.0. As with most print drivers, users are generally allowed three options to install and use the LaserJet 1010 successfully. The options are via the software wizard, manually install via operating system interface, and factory CD.

Factory CD installation can be performed using an internal or external CD-DVD drive. Do not attach the powered on printer’s USB cable to the machine until you are prompted to do so. Prematurely connecting the USB cable will cause issues during the installation process. Run the CD and follow installation wizard steps; during this process, you will be prompted to connect the USB cable. Once the USB cable is connected, the operating system will take time to recognize the printer, after which the wizard will complete, and the LaserJet 1010 will be ready for use.

The software wizard option follows the same prompts as the CD-DVD option, but much faster. The added speed is because of the CPU having available the files on the local disk. As with the CD-DVD option, do not connect the USB cable until prompted by the software.

The manual install option allows the installation of the driver using the Windows operating system. Power on the printer and connect the USB cable before initialing the manual installation process. Each operating system requires the user to install from the “Devices and Printer” section. The “Devices and Printer” is accessed differently depending on the Windows operating system version you are using. From the “Devices and Printer” section, select “Add Printer” and follow the steps until you are prompted to select the driver file. Select the driver and follow the instructions until the LaserJet 1010 is ready to use.
